Transonic Flow Calculations
In these lectures I shall attempt to survey some of the principal recent developments in computational aerodynamics. Prior to 1960 computational methods were hardly used in aerodynamic analysis, although they were already widely used for structural analysis. The NACA 6 series of airfoils had been developed during the forties, using hand computation to perform the Theodorsen method for conformal...
متن کاملA Finite Volume Method for Transonic Potential Flow Calculations
It is proposed to solve the exact transonic potential flow equation on a mesh constructed from small volume elements, which can be conveniently packed around any reasonably smooth configuration. the calculation is performed on two sets of interlocking cells. The velocity and density are calculated in the primary cells, and a flux balance is then established in the secondary cells. The scheme is...
متن کاملTRANSONIC FLOW CALCULATIONS USING TRIANGULAR FINITE ELEMENTS Richard
Princeton University, Princeton, NJ This paper desribes a technique for finding the numerical solution of the Full Potential equation for steady transonic flow about airfoils. The exterior but finite domain is discretized by breaking it up into triangles. Difference equations are formulated using variational principle and a formula for the derivative in an arbitrary polygon. The iterative schem...
متن کاملAcceleration of Transonic Potential Flow Calculations on Arbitrary Meshes by the Multiple Grid Method*
The paper describes a multiple grid method for transonic flow calculations. The proposed scheme incorporates a generalized alternating direction method as the smoothing algorithm. Numerical experiments with this multigrid alternating direction (MAD) method indicate that it is both fast and reliable.
